Digital Adoption For 2019: 3 Transformative Tools For Enterprise Learning & Development

If you work in enterprise learning and development, you’ve got one of the toughest jobs in a 21st century business: making sure that employees keep learning.

Not only does learning in today’s digital workplace have to be continuous, it must be fast. The quicker employees learn new skills, the sooner they can start using them. Fast learners make for a more productive workforce.

This is why digital adoption for 2019 is going to be a critical piece in your L&D puzzle.

Nothing’s more important than digital adoption for 2019

Core business systems are all becoming highly digitized and training employees how to use them is costly and time consuming.

Technology is designed to help us deliver better results in terms of speed and productivity. But it’s all in vain if employees don’t adequately adopt these technologies.

Making digital adoption for 2019 a top priority gives you a better chance of achieving training ROI.

When it comes to learning and development, enterprises have had enough of the old ways. Danny Belch, head of marketing for VR software creator STRIVR, says enterprises are demanding something better.

“Training in corporate America is looking for something new and looking for a boost and is to the point where the performance is suffering and companies are just looking for better, faster, cheaper, more effective ways to train.”

Traditional training methods are slow, inefficient, and achieve extremely poor retention rates. Enterprises are now turning to technology for real-time and on-demand, personalized, contextualized, training solutions.

One of the main challenges L&D professionals face is the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, which shows that we forget 90% of what we’ve been taught within a month.

The forgetting curve has an appalling impact on ROI, and L&D professionals have long been seeking ways to combat it. Finally now, there are emerging some transformative digital tools to help achieve this goal.

3 transformative tools for enterprise L&D

1. Virtual Reality (VR)

We’re hearing a lot about Virtual Reality (VR) in the L&D world at the moment. It’s having a huge effect on the world of adult learning. Enterprises are even beginning to incorporate VR into their training programs.

Walmart is a great example of an enterprise that has realized VR’s expanded learning capabilities. The multi-billion dollar company has installed VR headsets in its employee “academies”.

The headsets are being used to train Walmart’s one million in-store employees. VR software creator STRIVR has built 45 VR programs that train Walmart staff in everything from re-stocking shelves to slicing deli meats.

“VR training provides a safe space for associates to experience situations that are nearly impossible to replicate,” McKeel said in a statement. “The training is experiential, memorable, and fast.”

It’s also more efficient. VR prevents Walmart from having to hire new on-boarding professionals, or use existing employees to oversee training.

VR training actually combats the forgetting curve. Ebbinghaus discovered that the memory loss is more gradual if the information is reviewed in increasing time gaps (“spaced repetition“). With VR, this is possible.

2. Digital Adoption Platform (DAP)

Digital adoption for 2019 is a breeze with a Digital Adoption Platform (DAP).

The pioneers of this technology WalkMe advocate that, “using technology should be the way we overcome challenges, not the challenge itself.” This is the premise upon which the DAP is based.

The DAP provides at-the-minute guidance to digital platform and systems users. This is critical in successful digital adoption for 2019.

Employees today use more enterprise applications and digital tools than ever before. And since technology undergoes regular updates, it’s easy for employees to become frustrated, overwhelmed, and disillusioned by the constant change.

With a DAP on board, employees don’t need to worry about or spend time learning new software and applications. Since the DAP can be overlaid to any digital system, it learns user behavior and provides each individual with contextualized help.

No costly training programs needed!

3. Augmented Reality (AR)

“I believe that virtual reality and augmented reality can revolutionise surgical education and training.”

Shafi Ahmed, surgeon, Royal London Hospital

Augmented Reality (AR) is where digital information can be overlaid onto the real world.

AR can work through a pair of glasses, displaying important information over the top of what you’re seeing in front of you. For example, maintenance engineers can look at a piece of equipment and find out how to repair it from the data that’s being displayed.

Some L&D professionals would argue that AR is more powerful than VR, because users are actually physically in the situation at the time of learning. So they get an enhanced hands-on experience. In contrast, VR can only ever give you an imagined experience.

If you deal with enterprise training and development, your digital adoption for 2019 should be all about these three tools. As more and more enterprises gather momentum with their digital transformation, the role training plays becomes even more important.
