Recent research released by Infosys found that there’s a major digital adoption need in Australasia. Australian (AU) and New Zealand (NZ) businesses are trailing behind their global counterparts when it comes to digital maturity.
Only 17% of AU/NZ businesses were found to be digitally mature enough to build disruptive business models at scale. This is compared to 22% globally.
The 3 stages of digital maturity — which one are you in?
The Infosys report identifies three groups based on digital maturity:
Enterprises are “visionary” when they are able to transform to meet business objectives through new business models. Their innovative culture also allows them to do this.
Digital transformation is their number 1 priority because they understand it’s central to the success of all future endeavours.
Explorer enterprises are committed to improving their customer experience (CX). They have identified that digital tools can allow them to do this.
Explorers have researched and implemented programs that enhance CX, or differentiate them from competitors, increasing their brand value.
Watchers are largely focused on efficiency-driven outcomes of digital adoption. They haven’t yet realized and/or don’t understand the full potential that digital transformation holds.
Fundamentally, they remain outdated in terms of structure, operations, and culture.
The shocking digital adoption need discovered in Australasia
17% of AU and NZ respondents were identified in the report as Visionaries. What this shows is that, in comparison to global peers, fewer AU and NZ leaders have identified digital transformation as a central part of their business strategy.
Most AU and NZ businesses surveyed (55%) fell into the Explorers category. These organizations have at least identified that digital transformation can provide them with the differentiation they need to stay ahead of competitors.
Lagging behind the rest are the Watchers. 28% of AU and NZ respondents fell into this category, which is actually on par with global research. Watchers have partially deployed digital initiatives and are still focused on efficiency outcomes.
